Kristin Cavallari is eating more protein, so I am eating more protein
A simplified approach to get stronger for the Summer
I recently listened to an episode of Let’s Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari featuring her personal trainer, Kevin Mejia. If you’re someone who’s been dabbling in strength training and eating clean, all while still indulging in Friday espresso martini(s), you might want to keep reading.
Here are a few takeaways that shifted how I’m approaching fitness:
1. Track your protein, don’t just guess
I’ve been working on increasing my protein intake, and this podcast was a helpful reminder that tracking can be a game-changer. You don’t have to do it forever, but even a short period of tracking can reveal how much (or how little) protein you’re actually getting. I realized my go-to scrambled eggs were only giving me a fraction of what I needed, so I started adding light mozzarella cheese. Not only does it boost the protein, it makes them taste way better.
2. Lift heavier—it won’t make you bulky
Kristin used to stick with light weights (same, girl), but ever since Kevin encouraged her to go heavier, she’s become the perfect example that lifting heavy can sculpt and tone without adding bulky muscles.
3. Your routine doesn’t need to be perfect—just consistent
This one’s for the perfectionists. Kristin works out four to five days a week. And Kevin? More like 2-3. Some days it’s a tough gym session, other days it’s a walk with his family to get his steps in. He makes a great point that fitness isn’t just about working out; it’s about what you do outside of the one-hour workout.
The takeaway: It’s not about pushing yourself to the max every day. It’s about simply showing up consistently. That 20-minute hot girl walk after dinner? It counts.
Tips from my own kitchen
Grilled chicken kabobs are the easiest summer protein hack. Bonus points if you add tzatziki and eat outside.
I’ve been sneaking Greek yogurt into everything—it’s the perfect dupe for mayonnaise and sour cream, and even ranch when mixed with a seasoning packet. Or go crazy and make some home tzatziki. I’m a huge fan of love and lemon’s recipe.
